Suggestions for Use:

Depending on how much your students know about finding the main idea will depend on how you use these fiction reading passages. Third-grade students may need modeling of the activity before completing one on their own. Fourth-grade students should easily be able to find the main idea and supporting details after a brief introduction. Fifth-grade students could use these passages to review third and fourth-grade skills for finding the main idea and supporting details.

Teachers like you said…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love the format of these main idea pages! The simplicity of the text is great for my lower-level students, but I also love that the details are often presented in a way they can easily be found. – Shayann G.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I used this resource to remediate some of my low-performing students who needed more explicit instruction. I would highly recommend this product to others who need a straightforward resource to teach main idea in a fictional text. – Ashley A.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ LOVED this resource for helping teach main idea and supporting details to my students! They really enjoyed the way each passage was broken down into manageable steps – this is huge for kids! So thank you for this! – Sara V.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I liked that each one was on its own Google slide and you could also open them one at a time as well. Passages are just the right length and have a nice graphic organizer already on the page so the students do not have to go back and forth to another slide. – Clorinda W.

Extension Activity:

Have your students not only determine the main idea and supporting details but also summarize the text. Once students have completed an activity, have them use their graphic organizer with the main idea and three supporting details to write a summary of the text.

NOTE:

⭐This resource is the first in a 2-part pack. The passages are written on a 4th-5th grade reading level. This set is also harder than Set 1. The main idea may be found in the first sentence, second sentence, or last sentence of the paragraph. If you’re looking for reading passages written on a 3rd-4th grade level, you may want to check out Main Idea & Supporting Details Activities Worksheets & Graphic Organizers Set 1.
