  • 3 Cut, Sort, and Paste Activities

⭐Introductory Lesson

Themed mystery bags are a great way to teach and reinforce main idea skills. This introduction lesson takes some prep, but it’s worth it. You simply create a number of “themed” bags full of items that represent the main idea or topic of each mystery bag. You will need to create enough bags for stations around the classroom and include one extra bag for you to use as a model for your students. The objects could include small toys, pictures, household items, personal items… basically anything that will fit in a snack-size brown paper bag.

For this activity, I’ve included a list of ideas for you to use. These are suggested items that you can easily find around your home or classroom.

If you’re short on time, I’ve included 12 picture cards of items you could use which follow a variety of themes. Simply cut them apart and place them in individual bags. I also included 12 number cards to staple to the bags.

⭐Practice Activities

Some main idea resources and graphic organizers ask students to come up with the main idea of a passage without any scaffolding. This makes it very hard for students in the early stages of learning this skill.

The practice activities included in this resource helps students by giving them the main idea and the supporting details. They will then have to sort the main idea and details in the correct locations on a graphic organizer. This eliminates any frustration students feel when trying to come up with the main idea on their own. It also gives students practice distinguishing between the main idea and supporting details.

I have included 3 cut, sort, and paste practice activities for students.

⭐Assessments

The two assessments require students to identify the main idea and supporting details of a paragraph. Use these assessments to help you determine if your students have mastered this skill.

I have included 2 different assessments for students.

These activities are perfect for:

  • whole group instruction
  • morning work
  • small groups
  • independent desk work
  • assessments
  • early finishers
  • homework
  • sub plans, and so much more!
