Themed mystery bags are a great way to teach and reinforce main idea skills. This lesson takes some prep, but it’s worth it. You simply create a number of “themed” bags full of items that represent the main idea of each mystery bag. You will need to create enough bags for stations around the classroom and include one extra bag for you to use as a model to the class. The objects could include small toys, pictures, household items, personal items… basically anything that will fit in the bag.

For this activity, I’ve included a list of main ideas mystery bags for you to use. These are suggested items that you can easily find around your home or classroom.

If you’re short on time, I’ve included 12 picture cards of items you could use which follow a variety of themes. Simply cut apart and place in individual bags.

I also included 12 number cards to staple to the bags.

Included in download:

•12 Main Idea Mystery Bag Ideas (for physical objects you can find at home or in your classroom)

•12 themed picture cards to cut apart and place in bags (use these instead of finding physical objects for bags)

•12 Main Idea Mystery Bag Number Cards (to staple on the front of each bag)

•2 Main Idea Mystery Bag writing templates for students to list the main idea and details and to write a short paragraph about their main idea themed bag.

•1 Note to Parents about creating Main Idea Mystery Bags at home

This activity is super easy! All directions are included in the download. *Sorry, bags are not included. 🙂
